The following text shortly describes main abilities of this program. To get more details read please manual of "Handy Finance for Palm".

Starting and navigation

After starting you will see some tab sheets (pages) and main menu. The first page, "Import/Export" is intended for data exchange with "Handy Finance for Palm", other pages allows to view and navigate tables. From "Transactions" page you can filter transactions and see filtered balance. The active page will be remembered between sessions and the program will start at last active page. There are hints for most of controls, use menu "View \ Show hints" to enable or disable hints.

From menu you can call help, export report for transactions and change secondary settings. Any primary and secondary settings will be remembered after exiting. Hold a "Shift" key during program starting if you want to bypass restoring of program settings. Hold a "Shift" key during program exiting if you want to avoid saving of program settings.

Import/Export page

This page is intended for data exchange with "Handy Finance for Palm" using PalmDesktop. There are two modes of exchange, automatic and manual. You can switch between them using "Select an exchange type" bar.

"Import" and "Export" buttons allows to perform data importing and exporting actions. From menu "View \ Import/Export confirmations" you can enable or disable confirmations for these actions. Use "Clear all tables" button if you want to clear all your desktop data.

An automatic mode allows you to select any PalmDesktop user to exchange data with. If there is no PalmDesktop installed, this mode will be disabled. Once the user is selected, the program remembers it as one of primary setting. Before data importing it is recommended to synchronize your handheld device. After data exporting you need to synchronize too. Though there is no data editing on desktop for a now you may want to export data for another user or use finance desktop for backup purposes. In automatic mode you can choose a "View \ Import at startup" option. When this option is active the finance data importing from selected user will be performed at every program startup.

In manual mode you need to exactly specify the folders for data exchange, the importing folder and the exporting folder. You may type (or paste) the path in corresponding box or use a browse button to bring directory tree. In this mode you need to manually install exported .pdb files from corresponding folder.

Transactions page

There are two main elements on this page, the transactions table and the filtering panel.

The transactions table allows to view and navigate the filtered transactions list.

The filtering panel contains the set of filters for transactions and the total amount (balance) for filtered transactions. The total amount can be recalculated in any currency by selecting. currency from corresponding popup list

The set of filters is little reduced by comparison with Palm module, all other filters may be implemented soon. Almost all filters consist of checkbox (or label) with name of filter and a popup list with filter values. When the checkbox is checked, the corresponding filter is enabled, and the value of filter is got from corresponding popup list. All filters are applied immediately after changing it. When changing date, you need to leave date editing field to apply it.

By default the filtered columns (except date) are disappeared from table. For example if you have enabled "To account" filter, the "To account" column will disappear from table. To avoid this you may select menu "View \ Show filtered columns".

The order and widths of columns are saved after exiting. To restore the default view of columns you may select menu "View \ Restore default columns".

The filter panel can be showed or hidden using menu "View \ Show filter panel", by default it is visible. Also you can allow this panel to float by selecting "View \ Allow filter panel floating". Then, you can drag it anywhere. To dock it you need to hide this panel and then show it again.

Working with transactions and its filters is almost the same as in Palm module, see "Handy Finance for Palm" manual for more details.

Report exporting for transactions

There is ability for report exporting to external file. There are two types of files is supported now, the simple text (.txt) file and comma-separated value (.csv) file. The .csv file is accepted by Excel.

To export report you need to select "File \ Export report" and then choose the file name and file type.

The report consists of:

The list of columns is appeared in report exactly as in transactions table, it means with same field order and visibility.

Other pages

Other pages allow you to view and navigate all tables from "Handy Finance for Palm". By default there are only three main tables are visible: Accounts, Transactions and Currencies. You can view or hide secondary tables by selecting from menu "View \ Show all tables".

Acknowledgements

"Handy Finance Desktop" is created using KaDAO, pdbmake, palmdump and Borland C++ Builder 5.

KaDAO is Kiril Antonov's Data Access Objects components for Delphi and Borland C++ Builder, kiril@pari.bg, http://delphi.pari.bg. KaDAO is fully freeware and its source is open. There is no need to use BDE! As for me, it is more convenient than ADO. Also there are much more powerful commercial components KaDAO Deluxe for serious projects and for enterprise use.

pdbmake and palmdump are free programs with open source for parsing and creating Palm's database (.pdb) files. The author is John Walker, http://www.fourmilab.ch. This is an easy and fast way to exchange with Palm without writing complicated conduits.
